A BRIEF HISTORY OF WILKERSON COMPANY
The Wilkerson Company, Inc (WCO) of Crewe, Va was founded in 1947 by W. H. (Buster) Wilkerson. The principal
business of WCO until 1959 was related to the distribution and repair of automobiles. The retreading and
distribution of automobile and truck tires as its exclusive business began in 1959. In 1964, Buster, known for his
wisdom in handling finance, needed tires for the Company airplane. His "down home" market research determined
that aircraft tire retreading could save him significant dollars. Buster embarked on a 2 year mission of earning a
FAA approved license to retread aircraft tires; when many in the Industry said it could not be done. Since the 1966
FAA approval; the rest is history; as today WCO distributes 100,000 aircraft tires a year in 50 US States and 90
international countries and territories. Buster, age 90, remains active in the business and is the Head Resident
Engineer.
WCO is a family business that has 3 generations of active participants. Both of Buster's sons; William E. (Bill) and
James Lee (Jim) grew up in the business working after school and on Saturdays since they could walk. Bill, now
President, began his full-time service in 1969 after serving in the US Army. Jim, Sr. Vice President, after a 21 year
leave of absence began full-time service in 1985. The third generations of Wilkersons’ are now active in the
business full-time. Jim's daughter, Sara Wilkerson Andrews, responsible for Sales and Accounting, began her
career in 1993; Bill's son, Bill, Jr. joined the ranks in 1996 and is the Assistant Manager of Plant Operations and Bill’
s daughter, Jayne Wilkerson Thomas joined the Sales and Business Office in January, 2005. The Wilkerson Family
also includes Sr. Vice President Joe W. Weatherford; who has worked with the WCO Family for 58 years.
